ProACT – Assigning proactive improvement actions


Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is one of the classic definitions of madness. ProACT is our tool for change.

To main the current level of performance, you will continue to fix problems that occur. This is reacting to any failures. Unless the faults are fixed the level of performance will decline.

Over time there will be some actions put in place that actually improve the level of performance. However unless some sustaining actions or processes are in put in place, these will be short lived and you will go back to your original level of performance.

To create awareness and determine either why your performance has plateaued or when you implement an action to improve performance, it does not last, it is crucial to know the type of actions you are implementing. This can be categorised as follows:

  • Type 1 – Maintain actions – Prevents decline
  • Type 2 – Change actions – Incremental improvements
  • Type 3 – Update actions – creates sustainability


By determining the type of actions being implemented will help you relate it directly to the results being achieved. This will enable you to identify the reasons for the type of performance you are currently getting. By knowing this, you can change the type of actions being assigned to get the results that you want.

The ProACT model

Consider the model below:


Examples of the type of actions in the 3 categories are as follows:

1. Type 1 – Maintain actions (the chuck stops performance from dropping)

  • Procedures to ensure that standards are kept
  • Asset care tasks that maintain current standards
  • Short term fixes – mechanical/electrical

2. Type 2 – Change actions (rolls the ball – improving performance incrementally)

  • New methods and/or procedures that reduce losses
  • Re-designs, improved plc programmes and other improvements
  • Changes to maintenance activities preventing recurrence
  • Failures that have had root cause identified and resolved


3. Type 3 – Update actions (keeps the chuck in place keeping up with improvements)

  • Updating procedures and method statements after improvements achieved
  • Communication and sharing to ensure improvements are yielded at multi-level (area/shift)


  • Review your current action list and determine the type of actions present. This will provide you with an indication of the type of results currently being achieved.
  • On-going when assigning actions, consider categorising it to determine a balance and ensuring that you are implementing improving and sustaining actions.


By ensuring that you have a balance of the 3 types of actions, will enable you to incrementally improve your performance and ensure that it is sustained at the new level.
